The Bowl of Vanilla Ice Cream

How do you make basics look stylish and elevated? Yup, here we are, back to accessories. Accessories are without question my favorite fashion category. I like to refer to my vanilla ice cream comparison when explaining them and how they change a look. Think of a bowl of plain vanilla ice cream. It’s yummy on its own, right? Now think of that bowl of plain vanilla ice cream with all the toppings you love. Suddenly it goes from good to amazing because of all the different textures and layers of flavor.

But, how do you know which accessories are worth the splurge and which ones you can steal?

My general rule is, an accessory in a neutral color and a classic design, which you know you’ll reach for often, is worth the investment. Same goes for all the other “worker bee” accessories, as I call them. You can have more fun with those accessories you know will only last one or 2 seasons; Not necessarily from a quality perspective, but from trend one . For example, something with a trending design, something in a trend color, something in a trend print… and just for the record, a leopard print is a neutral, not a trend. Read that again and repeat.

Go through your closet and look for colors you buy a lot of, prints you're drawn to and think about your overall style. The next time shop, think of your closet and the bowl of vanilla ice cream. Where can you fill in with the right accessories to make complete, styled looks?

Following these guidelines actually saves you money longterm and ensures your closet has the right amount of both sensible and fun, because, why on earth would you always only want to be sensible? That's not a rhetorical question.
